Community Spotlight
Tacoma Community House has been helping newcomers put down roots here since 1910, which makes it one of the oldest nonprofits in the city. From its Hilltop campus it offers English classes, job readiness and placement help, immigration legal services, and support for crime victims, serving immigrants, refugees, and longtime residents alike. In September it marked Welcoming Week, and on Friday, Oct 23, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., it hosts a job fair that connects job seekers with local employers. If you want to pitch in, the organization regularly needs volunteer tutors and conversation partners, and the job fair is a good first visit. Tacoma Community House events

This Week in Tacoma History
On October 4, 1900, farmers in the Puyallup Valley threw a modest three-day harvest celebration they called the Valley Fair, with livestock, produce, and a few thousand curious neighbors from Tacoma and the surrounding towns. It stuck. The little October gathering grew into the Western Washington Fair, took on the name Washington State Fair in 2013, and today draws more than a million visitors each September, making it one of the largest fairs in the country. The grounds have seen darker chapters too: in 1942 they were pressed into service as the Puyallup Assembly Center, where more than 7,000 Japanese Americans from the Seattle and Tacoma area were held before being sent to inland camps. So the next time you're in line for a scone, remember it all began 126 years ago this week with a handful of valley farmers showing off their pumpkins.

- Next City Council meeting — Tuesday, Oct 6, 5 p.m. — Council Chambers, 747 Market St; details in the Government section above.
Before You Go
That's the week, neighbors. Since the City is asking about I-5, we'll ask too: which freeway crossing in Tacoma do you avoid on foot or bike, and what would make you use it? Hit reply and we'll share a few answers next issue. And if a neighbor would get something out of this, forward it along; it's the best way to help us grow.
Know a neighbor who would like this? Forward it along.
